The kitchen outlets were the first priority. In many homes, a single GFCI receptacle located at a counter or near the sink acts as a “master” that protects several additional outlets downstream. When that upstream device trips or fails, every outlet it feeds goes dark. That is exactly the pattern the homeowner described, and it is a very common finding in Florida homes.

While working through the job, the inspection photos documented several additional conditions at the panel worth noting.

Panel Conditions Worth Addressing

The photos showed corrosion on the terminations and the interior of the enclosure, along with evidence of water finding its way into the enclosure over time. Moisture intrusion is common in Central Florida’s climate, particularly in older or outdoor-adjacent panel locations. Left unaddressed, corrosion gradually increases resistance at the termination points, which shows up over time as heat discoloration around a termination, a condition visible on the copper lugs and torque terminal in the before photos.

A loose lug was also visible in the inspection images. Lug connections are designed to hold conductors firmly under a specified torque. When a lug works loose, the contact area shrinks and resistance at that point climbs. The before photos also showed what appeared to be DIY workmanship, including a splice located outside of an enclosure, a configuration that predates current NEC requirements for protected splicing.

None of these conditions were present at every point in the panel: neutrals and grounds were separated properly, breakers were correctly sized, AFCI and GFCI protection were present in required areas, and the grounding system checked out. The open-knockout finding and the absence of surge protection were the two items flagged for immediate attention, and both were resolved during this visit.

What We Fixed

Our technician on-site worked through each item systematically.

For the kitchen, the team installed three Pass & Seymour 2097-TRW 20A 125V self-test, tamper-resistant GFCI receptacles. These devices meet NEC 210.8 for GFCI protection in kitchen areas and include a self-test function that monitors the device continuously, so the homeowner does not have to remember to press the test button each month. The result: four kitchen outlets that had been dark for months are fully functional again.

For the garage, the crew ran a new 20-amp circuit using 12/2 Romex, up to 10 feet in open area, and added a Square D QO120 single-pole 20-amp breaker at the panel to feed it. A second Pass & Seymour 2097-TRW GFCI receptacle serves this circuit, keeping it in line with NEC 210.8 requirements for garage locations.

Outdoors, the existing outlet was replaced with a new Pass & Seymour 2097-TRW GFCI receptacle mounted in a Bell 5320-0 weatherproof box, covered by an Intermatic WP3100C in-use bubble cover. This assembly keeps the outlet accessible in all weather while meeting the weatherproof enclosure requirements for outdoor receptacles.

Finally, a PSP Vortex 120 kA whole-home surge protector was installed at the Square D QO panel. This Type 2 device, installed per NEC 285.25, sits at the service entrance and intercepts transient voltage spikes before they reach any branch circuit in the home. A Leviton LL630 field-installable main lug set was also added to the panel as part of the service work.
